Offer Description
The research will focus on modeling radiative transfer in the atmosphere to reduce uncertainties in estimates of downward surface solar irradiance provided by the model BRASIL-SR used in solar energy assessment for the Brazilian territory. The model is consolidated in the energy sector community and has contributed to building a solid database for national energy planning. Past research funded by FAPESP has achieved excellent results in improving the radiative parameterizations of atmospheric gases and aerosols for cloudless conditions using locally observed data.
The post-doctoral researcher will work on developing methodologies for radiative parameterization based on aerosol products provided by satellites (MODIS n3 and GOES-R) and mesoscale numerical models (CAMS and MERRA-2 reanalysis ), assuming any cloud coverage conditions. The proposed study is essential in reducing uncertainties and expanding support for solar resource mapping and climate modeling applications. It will require interaction with international groups to expand the geographical range of the results to support studies on integrating energy resources in South American countries.
The studies will be based at the National Space Research Institute (INPE) in Brazil and will involve close collaboration with federal universities of São Paulo (UNIFESP), Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and Itajubá (UNIFEI).
This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationality. The selected candidate will receive a Post-Doctoral fellowship from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) in the amount of R$ 9,047.40 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent on items directly related to the research activity.
More information about the fellowship is at: fapesp.br/oportunidades/6461.
