The position offered is based at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) – Rhode-Saint-Genèse, Belgium. The subject of the PhD is "Uncertainty Treatment in Aerothermodynamic Experimental Databases." The objectives are as follows: To study and develop uncertainty quantification methodologies for the assessment of the aerothermodynamic database of an ablative Thermal Protection System (TPS); To develop surrogate models for uncertainty quantification applicable to both experimental and computational data sources for the development of reliable aerothermodynamic databases for ablative TPS; To understand how to use experiments for improving the predictions of numerical simulations.

Benefits

The students will be employed for 36 months by VKI. The salary level will be according to Marie Curie rules, including family allowance (if eligible). All contracts will include Social Security coverage, and benefits according to national laws in Belgium.

Skills/Qualifications

Requirements: Broad knowledge of fluid mechanics, applied mathematics, numerical methods, physics and chemistry is required. Good programming skills are required in at least one of the following languages: fortran, c, c++. Experience in measurement techniques, data processing, and stochastic methods is a plus. Experience or development of simulation tools for fluid dynamics or other disciplines is highly appreciated. The candidates are expected to: • have a very good knowledge of English (spoken and written); • be team players; • be able to work independently, creatively, and methodically; • should be willing to present research findings at national and international conferences and publish in international journals. Candidates can be of any nationality. Applications from women candidates are strongly encouraged. The candidate must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies) in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date (foreseen between January and September 2017).

Specific Requirements

Applicants must be in his/her first 4 years of his/her research career and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. The 4 years are counted from the date a degree was obtained which formally entitles to embark on a doctorate.
