Offer Description

About TALOS-Project The objective of the Talos ERA Chair Project funded by the European Union is to create a new centre of excellence in Artificial Intelligence for SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities) that will interconnect several departments of UoC departments at Rethymnon (the Schools of Philosophy, Education and Social Sciences, coordinating department: Department of Philology) under a common research and teaching agenda. TALOS will combine the strengths of neural networks with symbolic reasoning to create a scalable, sustainable and explainable representation of knowledge in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. In order to reach this general objective, six related Research Topics (RT) will be pursued. This call is part of the Research Topic 1: Semantic Annotation of texts (Digital Classics). Position Description: The offered job position will concern the study and creation of openly accessible digital resources for Classical Studies/Ancient Greek Philology, through Artificial Intelligence methods such as Knowledge Representation (CR), Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). The thesis will include the following: 1) Creation of ontologies/knowledge graphs in order to create a tagged corpus of texts of Ancient Greek Literature (prose and/or poetry) and a set of open linked data (LOD), widely-accessible-interoperable-interoperable-reusable (FAIR) in open access. 2) Semantic annotation of the following, individually or in combination (indicative): (a) named entities (b) events (c) geo-location (d) sentiment, emotion The aim of the research is to create ontologies and knowledge graphs for the field of Classical Studies, aiming at the semantic annotation of a corpus of texts of Ancient Greek Literature. For this purpose, the contribution of Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Representation, Natural Language Processing, and the international standards ISO & W3C will be studied. The research will include ontologies and knowledge graphs used with significant positive results in Digital Humanities and Digital Classics in particular. The end result will allow the user to pose queries e.g. as to events, persons and other named entities (e.g. geographical entities etc.) that occur in the ancient texts under study, which the system will be able to answer, also retrieving the relevant passages. Expected results: 1. doctoral thesis (first completed version) Title: Semantic Annotation and Knowledge Graphs for Classics/Ancient Greek 2. one presentation at a conference 3. one article in scientific journal
