Offer Description

About TALOS-Project The objective of the Talos ERA Chair Project funded by the European Union is to create a new centre of excellence in Artificial Intelligence for SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities) that will interconnect several departments of UoC departments at Rethymnon (the Schools of Philosophy, Education and Social Sciences, coordinating department: Department of Philology) under a common research and teaching agenda. TALOS will combine the strengths of neural networks with symbolic reasoning to create a scalable, sustainable and explainable representation of knowledge in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. In order to reach this general objective, six related Research Topics (RT) will be pursued. This call is part of the Research Topic 3: Pattern Recognition in Literary/Journalistic Corpora. Position Description: The offered job position is about Themes in Greek literature and culture through Natural Language Processing/Machine Learning (NLP/ML) methods. The work entails the following tasks: 1) Corpus/dataset creation a) 19th century or other Greek literary corpus (clean text in .txt form) 2) Annotation (indicative) a) Named Entity Recognition (NER) b) Sentiment 3) Analysis (indicative) a) Correlation between sentiments and linguistic context using n-grams b) Different ML and Deep Learning (DL) architectures for Sentiment Analysis (for instance Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machines, Regression Models, standard RNNs, BERT, GPT-4) c) Use of different word embeddings (standard, author-specific, period-specific etc.) Expected results: 1. doctoral thesis (first completed version) Title: Digital Scrutiny of Modern Greek Literature (provisional) 2. two presentations at a conference and/or an article in scientific journal

Contract Duration: 36 months Total budget: 72.000, depending on experience and qualifications

Eligibility criteria

Required qualifications: Master Degree Philology or Linguistics and/or in Computer Science and/or Digital Humanities Excellent Knowledge of English Two (2) reference letters Additional qualifications Second Master Degree in Philology or Linguistics and/or in Computer Science and/or Digital Humanities (1 point X degree grade, up to 10 points) Proven experience (research and/or professional) in a field that combines humanities/social sciences (education, linguistics, sociology, political science) with computer science (5 points per year-up to 25). Candidates who meet at least the requested qualifications of the call, will be in invited to an interview, which will take place upon notification by the Evaluation Committee. The interview will assess the knowledge background, the exact reasons why the candidate chose to apply for a specific position, the candidate’s ability to focus primarily on the position being instead of other occupations, his general scientific and organizational profile, his personality and fluency in task organization, teamwork and initiative.
