Offer Description
About UAB and the Institute of Neurosciences
The Institut de Neurociències (INc) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB; http://inc.uab.cat) is one of Spain’s premier research institutions in the field of brain and nervous system disorders. INc is ranked among the best in total number of scientific manuscripts and citations in the Neuroscience ́s field in Spain. The UAB is one of the top-ranked Universities in Spain and has the following facilities and specialized staff: Animal Housing Facilities, Cell Culture Unit, Histology Unit, Advanced Microscopy Core, Molecular Biology Laboratory Service, and Service for Development of Viral Vectors
About your role
We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position (3 years, start date late 2023). The candidate will be incorporated into a recently established programme of ERC and Spanish ministry funded research based at the Institute of Neurosciences of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Our work aims to gain a mechanistic understanding of the circuits through which the brain can internally generate highly structured neural activity during sleep (e.g. realistic simulations of episodic experiences during dreaming, and precise reactivations of neurons encoding recent experiences), how this activity is coordinated between brain regions, and the function it might serve.
Several specific lines of research are possible, and the precise project will be agreed in discussion with the candidate. Where required the candidate will be trained in the use state-of-the-art in vivo 2-photon calcium imaging, optogenetic and virtual reality approaches to measure and perturb neural circuits in awake behaving and sleeping mice at cellular and subcellular resolution.
Requirements
- Research Field
- Neurosciences
- Education Level

We welcome applicants with an interest in systems neuroscience from a range of experimental and computational backgrounds and would particularly value experience in one or more of the following:
- In vivo physiology in mouse, especially using optical methods such as 2-photon microscopy
- In vivo optogenetics, particularly using holographic stimulation
- Computational neuroscience, particularly in applying deep learning to neuroscience datasets
- Programming in Python or MATLAB
Requirements
- PhD in a relevant subject area (Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology etc.)
Assessment criteria
The following aspects of the applicant's CV will be taken into account:
Professional knowledge and experience.
- The ability to undertake independent research.
- Experience in in vivo physiology in neuroscience such as electrophysiology or calcium imaging
- Experience in the area of neural plasticity and/or stroke
- Experience of data analysis in Python, MATLAB or another environment
Competences
- Initiative and communication skills.
- The ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- Flexibility and adaptability.

- PhD Neuroscience or a relevant related field
- High level of spoken and written English
To apply please write to adam.ranson@uab.cat with a CV, letter of motivation (max 1 page) including any specific lines of research that are of particular interest, and if possible a letter of recommendation (from someone you have previously worked with) or if not a reference who can be contacted. Please include the text “Postdoc MINECO” in the subject.
The selection process, following that which is outlined in the European OTM-R, will be carried out in two phases: a first pre-selection phase and a second interview phase.
A committee will be tasked with carrying out both phases, both the initial evaluation and the subsequent interview. This committee will be made up of one external expert and two experts from UIC Barcelona.
The following criteria will be assessed in the initial phase:
- Curriculum vitae
In the second phase of interviews, the following will be considered:
- Curriculum vitae
- Research interests and experience
