Offer Description

 

We invite applications for a Doctoral Research Fellowship in second language (L2) phonology at the Center for Linguistics Research (CLUNL) at NOVA University Lisbon Portugal. The post is available for 10 months and potentially renewable. The preferred start date is October 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter. The deadline for applications is August 18th.

 

The successful applicant will join an international research project (ProPerL2: Production and Perception in L2 speech learning) that investigates (1) the impact of perception and production training in L2 speech learning and (2) the role of cognitive factors. The project is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and led by Professor Susana Correia (NOVA University), in collaboration with Professor Anabela Rato (University of Toronto) and Professor Patrick Rebuschat (Lancaster University).

Job description:

The successful applicant will perform a range of tasks such as the following:

  • Setting up experiments on speech perception and production in widely-used platforms;
  • Overseeing the successful conclusion of data collection;
  • Analysing and interpreting experimental speech data.

PhD in Linguistics. Preference will be given to candidates with a research background in second language acquisition and experimental phonology.

Essential skills:

  • Strong background in experimental design (in setting up and running speech perception and production experiments in Gorilla)
  • Experience in collecting data online
  • Basic knowledge of data analysis, including linear-mixed effects modeling
  • Good conference presentation record and, preferably, good record of manuscripts published, under revision or submitted
  • Functional competence in written and spoken English (if non-native)

Desirable skills:

  • Experience in writing ethics protocols and preregistration forms

Excellent time-management skills

Specific Requirements

Preference will be given to candidates with a research background in phonetics and phonology, laboratory phonology and second language acquisition.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for his position (Art. 6, Reg. n.º 950/2019, FCT Regulations), applicants need to fulfil the following criteria:

  1. Be enrolled in a PhD program

 

As noted above, applicants whose Master degree was granted by a university outside of Portugal are required to have the degree officially recognized by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior) before signing the employment contract.

Selection process

Evaluation criteria:

CV – 50%

Experience with research work (including submitted/under revision or published manuscript(s)) – 35%

References – 10%

Notification of results: The successful applicant will be notified via email.

After communication of the provisional list with the evaluation results, candidates have a period of 10 working days to comment, if they wish, in a prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of article 121 in the Code of Administrative Procedure. The final decision must be taken within a maximum period of 60 working days after the conclusion of the prior hearing of interested parties or the public consultation. A complaint may be lodged against the final decision within 15 working days, or an appeal may be lodged with the maximum executive body of the funding body within 30 working days, both after the respective notification.
