PhD position in Experimental Physics: Design of a quantum whispering gallery setup for ultracold neutrons

At the Atominstitut the Research Unit of Neutron- and Quantum Physics TU Wien is offering a position as A Postdoc with 30 hours/week. Possible start: March 2023.

The research unit Neutron and Quantum Physics at TU Wien and Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble are linked to the qBounce experiment, which connects different areas of physics such as gravitation, quantum mechanics, and low energy particle physics. Measurements are performed at ILL.

Your Tasks:

  • Complete the design, construction, and rigorous tests of a neutron storage setup for gravity resonance spectroscopy, and a neutron-optical device
  • Perform metrological measurements of, gravity, and any deviation from Newton's law as well as several parameters of the standard model using the new setup
  • Participate in workshops, write papers, and represent the project to the public
  • Write your PhD thesis

  • Skills in programming (C/C++, Python, Labview and Mathematica)
  • Solid knowledge of (at least a few of) quantum physics , electronics, mechanics, vacuum physics
    thermodynamics, lasers, vacuum physics
  • Good communication skills in English.
