Offer Description

In the Optical and WIreless sensors Networks for 6G scenarios (OWIN6G) project, key industry and academic stakeholders are brought together with the aim of developing a structured European training programme (TP) in optical technologies to facilitate disruptive wireless sensor applications within sixth-generation (6G) networks. OWIN6G will be the first Doctoral Network dedicated to training new generation of early-stage researchers (i.e., doctoral candidates, DCs) in the field of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for the Internet of Things/Internet of Everything as part of the 6G and beyond focusing on novel sensors, solar-cells for energy harvesting and optical detection, and hybrid RF-optical wireless technologies, and the application of machine learning to improve adoption, optimization, and security aspects in sensor networks.

Maxlinear Hispania holds one open position for an Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) of 36 months duration, with an annual gross salary of around 37,250.40€. ESRs can also benefit from a maximum family annual gross allowance of around 5,940€.

Estimated start date of the project 01/09/2023

Detailed job description

The selected candidate will work on state-of-the-art IEEE 802.11-based networks as part of the OWIN6G vision on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). These kind of networks will significantly offload data and signaling information burden from 6G networks. The main objectives to cover in this position are (i) to design efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) layer scheduling algorithms for heterogeneous dense Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), based on existing and future advancements of IEEE 802.11 standards, (ii) and to investigate the application of machine-learning-based scheduling algorithms for the hybrid OWIN6G network as well as the incorporation of energy efficiency awareness into the scheduling process.

Expected Results: (i) Design of MAC scheduling algorithms for IEEE 802.11 networks; (ii) investigation of ML/AI-based MAC scheduler algorithms; (iii) experimental validation of the designed MAC scheduling algorithms in a set of reference scenarios of interest using Network Simulation tools, and (iv) detection and extraction of Key Performance Indicator (KPI) to evaluate the performance of the designed MAC scheduling algorithms.

Planned secondments: ESR will visit Universitat de València (UV) (3 months – embedded system development and electronic design strategies), Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) (3 months – MAC algorithms e. g. based on coordinated OFDMA), and Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) (3 months – SDN control plane implementations for MAC protocols)
