Researcher:

There is a vacancy for a researcher position at the Michael Sars Centre (www.uib.no/en/michaelsarscentre) in the research group headed by Dr. Patrick Steinmetz. The position is for a period of 6 months and is funded on the core budget. The Michael Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen and is partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) (www.embl.de). The place of work will be at the Michael Sars Centre. The preferred but negotiable starting date is August 2023.

About the project/work tasks:

The research group ‘Evolution of nutrient and growth homeostasis in animals’ is interested in understanding how animal growth is regulated by feeding using the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis as research organism. A major focus of the lab is to identify and study stem and progenitor cell populations in the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis. We have generated a single-cell dataset and transgenic knock-in reporter lines to identify stem cells in the sea anemone Nematostella. The successful candidate will analyse the mutant phenotype using existing transgenic lines and perform spatial expression analysis to validate the singe-cell dataset. In addition, the candidate will lead the manuscript writing on these two projects together with the group leader.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within the field of Genetics or Developmental Biology and must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • The successful candidate must have experience in working with mutant and transgenic knock-in lines in the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis.
  • Prior experience in performing in situ hybridisation on Nematostella adult tissue is also essential.
  • A strong motivation to perform research at an internationally competitive level is expected.
  • The ability to work both independently and to cooperate with others in a structured manner is essential.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English is a requirement.
  • The application cover letter, in English, must explain the candidate's interest in this workgroup and how the candidate's skillset matches the position.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
