MARIE CURIE GRANT AGREEMENT NUMBER | 101073040 |
The laboratory of X-ray micro and nano computed tomography of CEITEC BUT (CTlab) is looking for a talented and motivated Ph.D. student to work on research projects in the field of X-ray computed tomography and material characterization. This Ph.D. posting is a part of the 14 Ph.D. positions related to the European project RELIANCE (https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/45477) – Ph.D. project 2.
This European project is running from 2023 to 2027 in Europe with five institutes: Danmarks tekniske universitet (DTU – Denmark), Universiteit Leiden (UL – The Netherlands), Chalmers tekniska högskola (CUT – Sweden), FEI SAS (France) and the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC BUT – Czechia). Via the mandatory network training provided by RELIANCE, you will participate in summer schools, workshops, and scientific meetings together with top scientists and your 13 fellow Ph.D. students in the RELIANCE network. You will also carry out a secondment to an industry partner and/or network partner.
Together with your other Ph.D. colleagues in other institutes, you will develop and implement multimodal X-ray imaging and scattering tools that will enable the automated real-time analysis of the structure and morphology of high-performance polymeric materials and composites. You specifically will focus on X-ray computed tomography and its application for non-destructive real-time imaging of the internal morphology of these materials. During the completion of your Ph.D., you will work with hi-tech imaging instrumentation and enable the development of a new generation of composite materials.
Objective
The objective of the Ph.D. project is to explore the possibilities of CT scanning for the quantification and digitization of composite material structures. You will test the limits of standard CT imaging setup for the future usage of in-line systems and use simulations to explore alternative and sparse data acquisition to speed up the imaging process. These simulations will then be used to create a detailed structural model to establish the experimental parameters and the CT reconstruction procedure. Finally, you will present the achieved results at international conferences and prepare research manuscripts.
The hosting institute and the Ph.D. programme
You will work at the Central European Institute of Technology in Brno (CEITEC BUT). CEITEC BUT is a modern research centre focusing primarily on advanced materials, nanotechnologies, and cybernetics. The aim of the CEITEC Ph.D. School is to provide students from around the world an opportunity to get an education in contemporary scientific disciplines – with the standards of excellent foreign scientific institutions – in the inspiring environment of the city of Brno, which has been long established as a city of science and electron microscopy and is also the birthplace of J. G. Mendel.
The institute was established in 2011 and offers a cutting-edge research infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment (laboratory CT systems, electron microscopes, etc.).
You will work among over 130 Ph.D. students from over 16 different countries (more than 44 % of all students are of foreign origin), ensuring a rich and diverse academic environment.

The City
The city of Johann Gregor Mendel, the city of electron microscopy or the Czech Silicon Valley, are all nicknames for the city of Brno. About 20% of the city’s inhabitants are university students, which gives the city a young and lively atmosphere. Brno also hosts over 15 000 international students. Thanks to its position in the heart of Europe, it is easy to visit many of Europe’s metropoles (Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Budapest).
