Wroclaw Medical University is looking for candidates for the MSCA Fellowships 2021, which are due to become available as part of the Horizon Europe Programme. At this stage, we invite experienced researchers with a PhD, who are willing to come to Poland for 2 years, to send us an expression of interest. As soon as the details of the call are announced, we will begin a collaboration with you to draft a winning proposal.

Wroclaw Medical University conducts scientific and research activity in the field of medical and health sciences. It is a university with a 70-year tradition, educating at four faculties (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Health Sciences) 6,000 students, 400 doctoral students, carrying out about 500 research projects a year. In 2020, the University took the 2nd place in the ranking in terms of publications, among all national public universities. Also Wroclaw Medical University in 2019 achieved an impressive promotion to the range of 151-200 universities in the world (the best result among Polish medical universities) in the field of clinical medicine on the Shanghai List. The clinicaltrials.gov database shows that in the years 2014-2019 employees of the University (> 1000 researchers) were involved in over 420 commercial and non-commercial clinical trials.

Name of supervisor :

Julia Bar

Topic of the project/ proposal of topic:

“Naonofibrous scaffold with human dental pulp stem cells as bioactive construct for tissue engineering.” The issues which will be analyzed by: Identification of stem cells markers (CD105, CD90, CD73, CD44, Stro-1) and signaling pathways protein ( SHH, Notch-1, Wnt/β) expression on hDPSCs, and their influence hDPSCs attachment, and proliferation, and differentiation onto membrane. Analysis of signaling pathways role in hDPSCs differentiation onto membrane surface. Selection of membranes with suitable parameters for hDPSCS growth and differentiation to design an appropriate bioscaffold supporting cellular function ofregenerated tissue.

Short description of the project:

The general principle of tissue engineering involves three essential components: appropriate cells, two- or threedimensional scaffolds and inductive signals to regeneration of damage tissue. Human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) have received special interest in tissue engineering due to their biological behavior. The scaffold for tissue engineering should not be limited to a mechanical bioinert for cells support, but also should induce bioactive environment. Up to now various kinds of nanomaterials have been used to constructed scaffolds. Nanoparticles, unlike other biomaterials, present distinct biological properties can be used in medicine and dentistry. In tissue engineering and regenerative medicine there are still questionable issues that should be optimized and answered, for example how to select components such as: stem cells source, type of the scaffold and signaling factors which provide an adequate environment with appropriate morphogenic signaling for hDPSCs growth and differentiation into functionally cells onto membrane surface. In this project, we want to use a electrospinning membrane fabricate with different components such as: poly(L-lactide-co-caprolactone), poly (4- vinyl pyridine), polyhydroxybutyrate to design a scaffold for hDPSCs differentiation into osteoblasts. In this context, the aim of this project is to develop appropriate bioactive construct consisting of fabricate electrospinning membrane for hDPSCs which might be used in future for tissue engineering in dentistry and medicine.
