This high-level event provides an opportunity to present the recent policy developments on Advanced Materials in the EU and Japan, and to enhance research collaboration in this area.

For many years, Advanced Materials has been one of main pillars of Japan's Science, Technology and Innovation policy. It has produced various innovations such as lithium-ion batteries and blue light-emitting diodes. The Government of Japan is currently implementing its Materials Innovation Strategy, which aims at increasing materials innovation capacity, providing for both economic development and solutions to social issues, and leading the transformation to a sustainable society.

The EU has recently adopted a comprehensive strategy to advance the EU's industrial leadership in advanced materials, a crucial enabling technology for both the green and digital transitions. The Communication on Advanced Materials for Industrial Leadership outlines specific measures to harmonize R&I priorities and investments within the EU. The European Commission plans also to launch a EUR 500 million public-private partnership on Advanced Materials.

Building on the success stories of the EU-Japan collaboration in R&I in material sciences, both at the policy level (as discussed at the 7th EU-Japan Joint Committee Meeting on S&T Collaboration, Brussels, 7 December 2023), as well as at the research project level (since 2011, there have been many valuable collaborative projects under the EU Framework Programme for R&I), this event will launch the EU-Japan Enhanced Dialogue on Advanced Materials – a platform for sharing information on policy developments and exploring the opportunities to pursue collaborative research in the areas of mutual interest.
