Dr Zaid Omar is the winner of this year’s EURAXESS Prize. The Malaysian researcher who emerged victorious from the national Famelab competition Malaysia won a trip to visit a research institute of his choice anywhere in the European Union. He opted for a visit to the European Organization for Nuclear Research – CERN, in Switzerland, one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. CERN's main area of research is particle physics – the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces acting between them.
With the help of the EURAXESS Prize Dr Zaid visited Geneva in mid-June. Besides touring the CERN facilities he also met with fellow researchers to explore collaboration opportunities as well as colleagues at EURAXESS Switzerland and the University of Geneva.
Dr Zaid Omar is Senior Lecturer at the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Johor Bahru. His research interests entail computer vision and machine learning, medical imaging, and artificial intelligence.
Dr Zaid represented Malaysia in the Famelab finals in Cheltenham, UK in June 2017.
