4 PhD fellowships in biomedical engineering on MSCA "INTUITIVE" at Glasgow University

An excellent opportunity has arisen for 4 Marie Curie ITN Early stage researchers at the University of Glasgow.

INnovative network for Training in toUch InteracTIVE interfaces (INTUITIVE) in the Bendable Electronics and Sensing Technologies (BEST) group led by Professor Ravinder Dahiya.

INTUITIVE will explore ground breaking scientific and technological approaches in haptics through development of novel soft biomorphic tactile skin based on flexible electronics, miniaturized soft sensors, and a powerful new understanding of tactile information processing in humans - intrinsically shaped through the interaction with the environment, and aimed to advance robotics and assistive technology. The technological novelties of this project include touch sensor using materials such as graphene and new functionalities such as memory device in skin for deeper understanding of skin biomechanics through artificial means. Neuroscience investigations and computational modelling using predictive coding will explain how variable modes of interactions still lead to a stable representation of the objects we interact with, and how robots could use these principles to acquire knowledge of their haptic environment. This will also help developing intuitive and efficient haptic displays as an aid for the blind and prosthetics. Through participation in this ITN and targeted courses, the early stage researchers (ESR) will acquire complementary expertise of neuroscience, haptics, flexible electronics, microsensors, robotics and rehabilitation technology. Hands-on project training will be supplemented with formal training courses in relevant fields and a variety of courses such as IPR, grant writing and exploiting the scientific results. Mobility within the network targeted to each ESR will ensure exposure to both academic and industrial environments.

Salary: Approx. £35,000 - £45,000 per annum*

Researchers will receive an additional mobility allowance and, depending on personal circumstances, a family allowance.

This post is fixed term for 3 years in the first instance.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.

Eligibility requirements

According to the regulations for mobility within the Marie Curie programme, the researcher must not have carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of his/her host organisation (in this case, the United Kingdom) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to recruitment.

The researcher should not have obtained a PhD degree and should not have more than 4 year full-time or equivalent research experience since obtaining the degree which makes them eligible for starting the PhD degree.

All candidates are advised to visit the following website to obtain further details of the eligibility requirements for Marie Curie initiatives, see particularly page 8 to assess your criteria before making an application: - http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/wp/2018-2020/main/h2020-wp1820-msca_en.pdf

The University has been awarded the Athena SWAN Institutional Bronze Award.

*Approximate gross salary stated above is subject to employers NI deductions and the amount varies according to the living costs of host country.

Deadline is 10 March 2020.
