Description

Hosting Lab

The QUEPE Lab (Quantum Engineering and Physical Electronics) of the Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione welcomes postdoctoral candidates interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA-PF) in 2023 at the  University of Pisa for a research activity on "Analog Neuromorphic Integrated Circuits."

Research Topic

The research aims at developing analog integrated circuits for implementing neural networks on CMOS technology or on a hybrid platform using a CMOS technology substrates with analog non-volatile memory integrated with back-end-of-line processing. The challenge of equipping devices at the edge of the cloud with cognitive capabilities requires dedicated analog machine learning chips and innovations in architectures, circuits and technology, for which the hybrid integration CMOS and non-volatile memory technology seems extremely processing.

Supervisor

The research work will be supervised by Prof. Giuseppe Iannaccone, Professor of electronics and Deputy President of the University of Pisa, Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and Fellow of the American Physical Society. Iannaccone's interests include the quantum transport and device physics, design of integrated circuits and systems for intelligent autonomous devices and networks. He has published more than 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals and more than 140 papers in proceedings of international conferences. Giuseppe Iannaccone has coordinated a few European and National Projects involving multiple partners and has acted as the Principal Investigator in several research projects funded by European and National public agencies and by private organizations.

MSCA Funding

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action is a funding scheme that supports researchers’ mobility. Postdoctoral Fellowships may last 24-36 months, involving a research project, advanced training and knowledge exchange at the host institution.

Two type of fellowships are available

  • European Fellowships: They are open to researchers of any nationality, and any country, who decide to come to the University of Verona for a period of 12-24 months.
  • Global Fellowships: They are open to researchers of European nationality or long-term resident in Europe. The fellowship foresees a period of 12-24 months in an extra-European institution and a period of 12 months back to the University of Verona

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship offers a competitive salary, mobility and family allowances plus a budget for research and training costs; applicants are expected to have an excellent CV and a strong publication record.

Please note that applicants must comply with the Eligibility Criteria and the Mobility Rule (below).

Additional Funding of the University of Pisa

The University of Pisa has five additional two-year fellowships available for candidates that comply with the following criteria.

  • have applied to the MSCA-PF scheme
  • have indicated the University of Pisa as a host istitution,
  • have also received the "Seal of Excellence - MSC Actions" (mark > 85/100) but have not been funded.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must have a PhD degree at the time of the deadline for applications (13th September 2023). Applicants who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will also be considered eligible to apply.

At the call deadline, the applicant must have a maximum of 8 years experience in research, from the date of the award of their PhD degree. Years of experience outside research and career breaks will not count towards the above maximum, nor will years of experience in research in third countries, for nationals or long-term residents of EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries who wish to reintegrate to Europe.

Mobility Rule: The applicant may be of any nationality but must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy (for European Fellowships) or the host organisation for the outgoing phase (in case of Global Fellowship) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before 13th September 2023.

Application procedure

Expressions of interest must be sent by email to giuseppe.iannaccone@unipi.it no later than August 10th, 2023 and must consist of two pdf files:

  1. Complete and updated CV, clearly demonstrating all 3 eligibility requirements.
  2. Motivation letter, maximum one page.
