Description
Call closing 12th September 2018
Brief description of the Research Group:
Biological Oceanography Group, Phytoplankton Ecology Laboratory. We study the ecology and biogeochemical role of marine phytoplankton. In particular we focus on phytoplankton diversity and community structure, and key metabolic processes such as primary production, nitrogen fixation, calcification, and respiration.
Our approach is based on combining field observations, experiments with phytoplankton populations and microbial plankton communities, data meta-analysis, and modeling. The ultimate goal of this research is to obtain a mechanistic understanding of the linkage between environmental variability, community structure, and biogeochemical fluxes in the ecosystem.
Project description:
The project aims to understand the mechanisms underlying the interactive effect of temperature and nutrient availability upon biochemical composition, stoichiometry, resource allocation and metabolic rates of phytoplankton.
Research areas:
Environmental Sciences and Geology (ENV)
The University of Vigo (UVigo) is a public Spanish university located in Galicia (Northwest Spain). It comprises 3 campuses, the main one in Vigo, and two more in Pontevedra (30 Km from Vigo) and Ourense (95 Km from Vigo).
Its activities are funded by the Spanish and Galician governments (structural and competitive funding) as well as through financing obtained from RDI activities (private contracts, collaborations with industry, patents, consultancy, etc.).
In the last years UVigo has enormously increased its scientific output and its capacity to obtain external resources, being listed in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2011 and 2012. In the last 10 years, UVigo has participated in more than 60 EU research projects totalling more than 25 million euros
