About

About the Projects

 1. PhD Studentship in collaboration with AstraZeneca - Electrochemical Fluorination

Organofluorine compounds display unique physical, chemical and biological properties compared to their hydrogenated analogues. Therefore, it is not surprising to find numerous fluorinated molecules among the top best-selling drugs. However, the installation of a fluorine atom remains far from trivial. Hence, this project proposes developing a new practical, cheap, scalable and green method for the electrofluorination of aliphatic and aromatic compounds.

2. PhD Studentship - DualFlow - Combining the production of Green Hydrogen with the electrosynthesis of pharmaceutically relevant compounds

We have recently developed novel electrochemical methodologies that allow generating organic and organometallic highly reactive intermediates under mild, green, economical and safe conditions. Furthermore, we have successfully applied those methodologies to prepare new types of anticancer drugs.

We are now looking for highly motivated PhD students to join our team and further explore the synthetic potential of electrosynthesis

The candidate:

The projects would be suitable for a student with a strong background in synthetic chemistry and an interest in electrochemistry.

The Student will be supervised by Dr Kevin Lam (http://www.lamresearchgroup.com) and join a group of young, international and dynamic researchers!

The Laboratory.

The Lam Group is housed within a newly refurbished laboratory and is very well equipped with more than 14 Electrasyns 2.0, an electrochemical flow system, a glovebox, a solvent purification system, several automatic chromatography columns, its own GC-MS and HPLC-MS, etc.

The university will also provide the Student with routine access to 4 NMR spectrometers, several UPLC-MS, a high-resolution mass spectrometer, MALDI-TOF, etc.

Funding Note

The grant will cover the Home (UK and Ireland) tuition fees and offer a stipend in line with UKRI. Non-UK/IE applicants are welcome, but funding will cover only the tuition fees, and the international applicant will have to secure additional funding to cover their living expenses.
