About

Outline

In this project you will investigate the emotional and physical burden experienced by the people who care for people affected by stroke.

Over the past few years, a standard set of data for stroke survivors has been developed by a global working-group of stroke specialists. Building upon the success ongoing Welsh research into the Patient Reported Outcome measures (PROM) in stroke, this research project aims to assess the PROM in the relatives and carers of Stroke survivors across Wales.

You will first perform a systematic review and literature search of the health burden of stroke carers and assess what tools are used to assess those health needs. Subsequently you will identify stroke survivors and their careers within HealthWise Wales (HWW). You will approach them and ask them targeted questions related to their stroke journey. Finally, you will access the health information of the carers via data linkage.

HWW is a longitudinal population study funded by Health and Care Research Wales. It aims to have recruited 50000 Welsh participants by 2020. The participants have consented to be contacted to take part in research studies, complete follow-up questionnaires and for their routine healthcare data to be accessed and record linked to the data collected in HWW. Data are linked via the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) platform in Swansea University.

HWW is an open platform that is designed to have disease-specific research questionnaires embedded within it. This project will offer the carers of stroke survivors the chance to have their own health measured and assessed to help evidence the true burden of stroke disease on this group of people.
