About

The Mainz Physics Academy (MPA) within the Cluster of Excellence PRISMA+ offers several PhD Fellowships for outstanding graduates in an attractive and international research environment.

PRISMA+ addresses the basic questions about the nature of the fundamental building blocks of matter and their importance for the physics of the universe. PRISMA+ consists of renowned research groups in the areas of particle, low-energy and hadron physics. Conducting various new key experiments to study the fundamental forces and limits of the Standard Model is one of the main initiatives of the Cluster.

Within PRISMA+, the Mainz Physics Academy serves as an umbrella for all activities regarding education and training, early-career support, and recruiting.

The selected fellows will receive an attractive salary as well as individual travel and research funds. They can participate in all MPA activities, including lecture courses, seminars, retreats, summer schools, workshops and social events.

Successful candidates are expected to start the fellowship in the fall of 2020.

Applicants must demonstrate outstanding performance in their studies and are expected to obtain a Masters’ degree in one of the following fields

− Elementary Particle Physics

− Hadron and Nuclear Physics

− Atomic Physics and Physics with Ultra-Cold Neutrons

− Nuclear Chemistry

− Astroparticle Physics

− Theoretical Physics (quantum field theory, lattice gauge theory, mathematical physics, string theory)

They are encouraged to contact a PRISMA+ scientist who could act as supervisor (see www.prisma.uni-mainz.de/about/people/members).

Applications should include:

− Detailed curriculum vitae

− Cover letter including a short motivation statement

− Scans of university degrees including transcripts of records (lists of courses with your grades) in German or English

− Candidates who have obtained their degrees from a university where neither English nor German is the teaching language must prove their language proficiency (B2 level or higher) by a certificate not older than three years.

Please send your complete application as a single pdf file to mpa@uni-mainz.de before March 31st, 2020.

Please arrange for two signed letters of recommendation by senior scientists, with institutional letterhead, to be sent separately to the above address. Applicants should ask their referees to complete the Referee Form for Recommendation (see www.prisma.uni-mainz.de/mpa/phd-fellowship-programme) to be sent to the above email address together with the signed letter.

All documents may be submitted in English or German. Documents in any other language must be translated and legally certified by the German embassy, consulate or a certified translator.

Further information can be obtained from the coordinator of the Mainz Physics Academy, Dr. Marie-Christin Wedel (mpa@uni-mainz.de).
