About

Outline

This studentship is associated with EnergyREV, the UK-wide Innovate UK Prospering from Energy Revolution and UKRI funded Consortium that will provide evidence for scaling up smart local energy systems.

Background

There is a need to shift from individual smart buildings to smart local energy systems to achieve the UK and international carbon emission targets set. The impacts associated with this shift on and by the built environment need to be understood to maximise economic, environmental and social benefits, and to understand the effect of a broad range of barriers that may be faced.

Opportunities to minimise possible negative impacts and solutions to overcome them through the different stages of design, planning, construction, operation and demolition need to be identified. This strategy will enable the built environment and the systems within it to maximise the reduction of carbon emissions and improve quality of life and well-being whilst delivering new economic opportunities. Proposals that explore the potential impacts of scaling up smart buildings to smart local energy systems on and by the built environment will be considered.

Project aims and methods

This PhD will be associated with the EnergyREV consortium which involves more than 60 researchers from 22 universities who are working together to tackle the challenges around smart local energy systems from an interdisciplinary and whole-systems approach which will provide an unprecedented breadth of expertise and depth of knowledge.

Through its multi-disciplinary approach, as well as via strong links with the wider local energy community, EnergyREV will become one of the most significant international academic programmes delivering research to accelerate the uptake, value and impact of smart local energy systems. EnergyREV is one of the three key components of the UK Industrial Challenge Funds Prospering From the Energy Revolution (PFER) Programme.
