About

Outline

Comparative studies aim at emphasizing the relationships of authors, texts, works of art, movements and phenomena in different cultures, highlighting their aspects in terms of both continuity and specificity. In the contemporary era of multiculturalism and globalization, as the dissemination of ideas becomes increasingly more rapid and widespread, openness to alterity acquires fundamental significance and impacts linguistic, literary, and artistic experiences, thereby modifying long-established models and creating new ones.
On the basis of these considerations, and also with reference to recent interchanges within the European Union regarding cultural policies, the comparativist approach allows an important and original expansion of the themes and perspectives of recent research in linguistics, literature and art history.
The main objectives of the doctoral programme focus on preparing scholars with excellent critical and analytical skills in the fields of literature, languages and art history.
The tools and methodologies acquired by the Ph.D. candidates in their chosen fields will be enhanced and strengthened thanks to the typically comparativist contributions inherent in the comparison of different cultures, languages, literatures, works of art and their contexts. Within the basic uniformity of the doctoral programme, three curricula are offered: Italian Studies, Literary Theory and Italian Linguistics; Foreign Languages and Literatures: Art History..

Educational activities of the Doctorate

Ph.D. candidates will actively follow and participate in seminars, during which they will have to produce written reports, reviews, catalogue cards and bibliographical research. Continuous interaction with professors and experts within the seminars aims at providing methodological tools useful for research and the completion of the final thesis. The in-progress work on the thesis will be analysed in individual interviews with the tutor-supervisor and plenary meetings of the College, monitoring each work in its development; other doctoral students, of the cycle and previous ones, will be present, receiving thereby useful inputs as to common problems in the production of the final work.
Ph.D. candidates will be able to profit from the international contacts of the Doctorate, fundamental to retrieve documentary sources; for this purpose, each Candidate will study in a foreign university or institution for at least three months.
Lectures by foreign professors and international specialists complete the framework of the training activities.
Specialist journals connected to the Department or the professors of the College will provide a well-timed and significant editorial outlet for the best scientific production of Ph.D. students and Ph.Ds: Dante, Pirandelliana, Sincronie, Testo e senso, La lingua italiana, Carte di viaggio, and the international monthly magazine Mosaico, published in Brazil. In addition to the scientific value of the publications, it should be noted that the collaboration to these editorial activities (in line with the educational objectives set out above) will allow Ph.D. candidates to become aware of the operating system and rules of an editorial office.
