About

Outline

The Ph.D. program in “Classical Antiquity and its Reception: Archaeology, Philology, History” aims to train scholars with a firm methodological and critical foundation in the research fields corresponding to the following scientific-disciplinary fields: L-ANT/02 (Ancient Greek history), L-ANT/03 (Roman history), L-ANT/05 (Papyrology), L-ANT/07 (Classical archaeology), L-ANT/08 (Christian and medieval archaeology), L-FIL-LET/02 (Greek language and literature), L-FIL-LET/04 (Latin language and literature), L-FIL-LET/05 (Classical Philology), L-FIL-LET/07 (Byzantine Civilization), L-FIL-LET/08 (Latin Medieval and Humanistic Literature), L-LIN/01 (Glottology and Linguistics), L-OR/07 (Semitistics), M-STO/09 (Paleography). Unlike other doctorates on the ancient world, however, we strive to avoid that the specialized study of one of the three areas into which our PhD course is articulated (Archaeology, Philology, and History) may interfere with an integral view of antiquity; therefore, our PhD students, while working on different projects, are required to participate in all the planned teaching activities, often held by scholars of international renown. At the same time, each student is constantly supervised in the development of his/her doctoral thesis by at least two internal tutors and, in some cases requiring specific and rare expertise, by highly qualified researchers.
