Offer Description

Are you interested in researching the wider technological, organizational, and societal challenges and opportunities of DLT? Then we would like to get to know you.

Location: Madrid (ES) and Amsterdam (NL).
FTE:  1.0

JOB DESCRIPTION

When it comes to DLT (Blockchain), organizations are required to solve technological, innovation, governance, and stakeholder management challenges at the organizational (internal innovation development and management), ecosystem (alliances, platform emergence) and societal level (government, user adoption). Consequently, industry and research bodies must join forces and share expertise to properly investigate the phenomenon and maximize the societal and economic impact of DLT for EU and global entities.

We are looking to recruit a motivated candidate interested in the area of digital ecosystems/Digital Transformation to study the complexity of DLT adoption and management. The positions will be part of the DIEM (DLT: Innovation & Ecosystem Management) Marie Curie Industrial Doctoral Network. DIEM is a consortium of leading academic, industrial, and governmental organizations involving: Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam, NL), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim, NO), IE University (Madrid, ES), Durham University (Durham, UK), Accenture (FR), the Ministry of Digital Governance (GR), WEST Trade (M), CRH (IE) and multiple other associated partners.

The Doctoral Candidates will be spending 18 months with an academic partner (IE University located in Madrid, ES) and 18 months with industrial partners (6 months in CRH NEDERLAND BV and 12 months in Aline B.V., both located in Netherlands). The goal of the project is to offer excellent training and networking opportunities and develop the Doctoral Candidates into thought leaders in the areas of DLT, Digital Transformation and Innovation Management so that they can pursue a successful career in academia or industry.

The Doctoral Candidates are expected to successfully complete a rigorous training program, participate in research and networking events, orchestrate the content creation and social campaigns for DIEM, and deliver research excellence.

A career development plan will be prepared for the Doctoral Candidate in accordance with their supervisors and will include training, planned placements/secondments and outreach activities.

Project dc-9: “Blockchain for responsible business II: humanity”

The main purpose of this project is complementing DC-11, namely, to improve our understanding of how blockchain can drive responsible business behavior. In this case the focus lies on how poverty and (gender) inequality can be reduced via more responsible businesses. Initial hypotheses on how blockchain can be applied here: a) Ethical sourcing: blockchain can transform supply chains. It can encourage responsible buying mind-sets as it can help organizations make their supply chains transparent. This can uncover unforeseen patterns and enable organizations to take responsibility for the sourcing of their product, driving compliance irrespective of regulation requirements, b) Financial inclusion: an essential component in reducing poverty and inequality. Blockchain can provide decentralized means to provide access to a financial infrastructure to the un- and underbanked (of which 56% represent women). Key challenges around cost and lack of funding, distance from financial institutions and an absence of trust can be tackled with blockchain.

Different research bodies and coalitions are already trying to shed light into the challenges and implications of DLT at the local (e.g., the Dutch Blockchain Coalition) as well as EU level (e.g., the EU commission based Blockchain Observatory & Forum). DIEM is a Doctoral Network (Industrial Doctorates) that creates a platform for researchers to engage in the co-production of knowledge by investigating state-of-the-art applications, innovation challenges and societal implications of DLT across actors and industry boundaries. It will equip DCs with the competency to understand how fundamental shifts in digital technology can disrupt business models, industries, and the society, as well as equip them to pursue rigorous and interdisciplinary research projects with real world-impact. This new generation of responsible and innovative researchers will further contribute towards transforming Europe into a society capable of building its competitiveness on digital technology. During this project the DC students will follow a secondment in ALINE, a Venture Capital firm specializing is supporting technology for good start-ups. They will be able to get involved with 2 or 3 start-ups that pursue blockchain technology projects where the goal is positive societal change.
