Offer Description
The competition is open to persons who meet the conditions set out in Article 113 of the Act of 20 July 2018 - Law on higher education and science (Journal of Laws of 2018, item 1668) and the following qualification criteria:
1. required: a doctorate in astronomy or a closely related field, obtained within 7 years before the starting date of the employment (career breaks such as for maternity/paternity leave will be taken into account) OR in case of doctoral students in their last year – provide a copy of doctoral diploma after the defence, not later than 31 March 2023 (slight negotiations are possible);
2. required: a record of publications in the field of blazar physics and variability;
3. required: experience in SED modeling, time series analysis, and physics of blazars;
4. required: programming expertise (python, R, Mathematica, etc.);
5. required: good English skills, both oral and in scientific writing;
6. welcome: additional experience in wavebands other than gamma rays.
Project description:
The competition is announced within the project SONATA 17: „Constraining the physical mechanisms of blazar variability”, carried out by Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (project leader: dr Mariusz Tarnopolski).
Main objectives of the project:
1. investigate a large sample of Fermi-LAT blazar light curves with standard, nonstandard, and novel tools of time series analysis (ranging from periodograms/scalograms, through Gaussian stochastic processes, to Hurst exponents, and other);
2. perform the SED modeling in the gamma-ray regime, and extend the research to other wavebands if feasible and justifiable;
3. examine the variability properties in light of the prevailing physical models;
4. perform meaningful statistical analyses of the sample.
Main duties of the person hired on this position will include:
1. performing the high-energy SED modelling;
2. conducting some of the time series analyses;
3. assessment and interpretation of the results;
4. presentation of the obtained results at conferences and preparation of scientific articles describing them;
5. overview and supervision of students working in the project.

Additional Information
Remuneration/stipend amount/month: 10 000 PLN/month gross (full remuneration cost, including full social security and health insurance), amounting to about 6000 PLN/month after tax (plus a bonus salary once a year).
Prospective start day: as early as 1 February 2023, but preferentially not later than 3 July 2023.
