Offer Description
The DECADES (Design of Catalytic Processes with Deep-Eutectic-Solvents) Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions - Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN) is an interdisciplinary research training network of six universities and ten companies from six European countries. DECADES aims to develop the PhDs’ scientific expertise to produce excellent research and interdisciplinary collaboration with scientists from different fields, including biology, chemistry, and engineering. It is funded under the “Excellent Science” cluster of the EU’s Horizon Europe program.
Roles and Responsibilities
The main part of your doctoral research (25 months) will take place at Symeres (Location Groningen) under the supervision of Dr. Ton Vries (Head of Innovation and Technology at Symeres). However, the first eleven months of the research will be carried out at the University of Graz (Austria, with Prof. Robert Kourist). The PhD-project is funded for 36 months and would start by September 2023.
Your Ph.D. degree will be awarded based on the successful completion of the research work from Technical University Graz (TUG), Austria. You will also be required to participate in the training and workshop organized by the DECADES DN. As a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fellow, you are also expected to contribute your time disseminating your project’s results through public engagement and other scientific platforms.

(i) Production and characterization of N-acyl amino acid racemases (NAAAR).
(ii) Immobilization for flow chemistry purposes.
(iii) Design of deracemization processes of α-acyl amino acids in deep-eutectic-solvents.

- The applicant should have completed a Master’s degree (before the start of Recruitment around September 2023) in Chemistry or a related discipline.
- The applicant should show interest in conducting a research project independently and should enjoy the work in an international, interdisciplinary environment.
- The applicant should be creative, enthusiastic and have the ability to work in a team.
- Knowledge in Biochemistry and/or Biocatalysis is highly rated.
- Interest in flow chemistry is desirable.
- At the time of recruitment, the applicant must not have resided (or carried out his/her main activity e.g. work, studies, etc.) in The Netherlands, for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately prior to the reference recruitment date.

Additional Information
The salary consists of a monthly Living Allowance; in addition, researchers recruited within a MSCA-DN programme are entitled to receive a monthly Mobility Allowance and, if applicable, a Family Allowance depending on the marital status. The family status of a researcher will be determined at the date of her/his (first) recruitment in the action but can be changed during the action lifetime. The net salary will be determined after subtracting all compulsory (employer and employee) deductions and withholdings from the gross amounts in line with national legislation.
Candidates must be in the first four years of his/her research career, not have a doctoral degree, and not have resided in The Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.
