The DECADES (Design of Catalytic Processes with Deep-Eutectic-Solvents) Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions - Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN) is an interdisciplinary research training network of six universities and ten companies from six European countries. DECADES aims to develop the PhDs’ scientific expertise to produce excellent research and interdisciplinary collaboration with scientists from different fields, including biology, chemistry, and engineering. It is funded under the “Excellent Science” cluster of the EU’s Horizon Europe program.
Roles and Responsibilities
The central part of your doctoral research will be carried out at Leibniz University Hannover under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Selin Kara in the Institute of Technical Chemistry, Leibniz University Hannover. An academic secondment placement (6 months) will take place at the University of Groningen (Netherlands, with Prof. Marco Fraaije). Additionally, a placement at a company is foreseen at Johnson Matthey (United Kingdom, 3 months). The PhD-project is funded for 36 months and would start by October 2023.
Your Ph.D. degree will be awarded based on the successful completion of the research work from Leibniz University Hannover, Germany. You will also be required to participate in the training and workshop organized by the DECADES DN. As a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fellow, you are also expected to contribute your time disseminating your project’s results through public engagement and other scientific platforms.

This PhD research will focus on:
(i) Design of two-in-one DES systems for redox biocatalysis,
(ii) Protein engineering for increasing the activity and stability of the reductase and dehydrogenase,
(iii) Evaluation of alternative redox enzymes to design cascades for DES-involved system.

- The applicant should have completed at least four or five years education with a Master’s degree or Diploma (before the start of Recruitment around September 2023 from a recognized university in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biotechnology and should be eligible as graduate student at Leibniz University Hannover, Germany.
- The applicant should show interest in conducting a research project independently and should enjoy the work in an international, interdisciplinary environment.
- At the time of recruitment, the applicant must not have resided (or carried out his/her main activity e.g. work, studies, etc.) in Germany, for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately prior to the reference recruitment date.
- The applicant should have an excellent command of the English language at a proficient level (spoken and written) and the willingness to learn the local language of the recruiting country.

Additional Information
The salary consists of a monthly Living Allowance; in addition, researchers recruited within a MSCA-DN programme are entitled to receive a monthly Mobility Allowance and, if applicable, a Family Allowance depending on the marital status. The family status of a researcher will be determined at the date of her/his (first) recruitment in the action but can be changed during the action lifetime. The net salary will be determined after subtracting all compulsory (employer and employee) deductions and withholdings from the gross amounts in line with national legislation.
Candidates must be in the first four years of his/her research career, not have a doctoral degree, and not have resided in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.
