Offer Description

A 3-years PhD position is available in the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (MSCA-DN) “GENIUS - Glide-symmetric mEtamaterials for iNnovative radIo-frequency commUnication and Sensing”, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Programme and by the UK Research and Innovation.

The research project will be done at Politecnico di Torino (POLITO), Italy, for 1.5 years and at SINOWAVE, Sweden, for 1.5 years. The candidate will be enrolled in the PhD programme of POLITO.

The doctoral candidate will conduct original research in the design of reconfigurable integrated circuits with glide symmetry for G-band radars. First, at POLITO, she/he will develop an integral-equation formulation exploiting glide symmetries for the electromagnetic modeling of the entire structure and will design a 150 GHz antenna composed of travelling-wave elements integrated by means of glide symmetric electromagnetic band gap structures to achieve high compactness. Then, at SINOWAVE, she/he will design a beam forming network providing beam steering based on electrical/piezoelectrical reconfiguration and front-end modules with integrated transceivers. The whole designed system will be prototyped and measured at SINOWAVE.

GENIUS programme

Towards 6G telecommunication, IoT and various applications, higher data rates, better localization resolution, shared platforms among users and the development of autonomous vehicles are stimulating a revolution in technologies for communications and sensing.  New antennas and components are required at millimeter waves, being wide-bandwidth, light-weight, low-cost. Unfortunately, existing technologies are currently very bulky, lossy, heavy, and expensive.

It has recently been discovered that electromagnetic waves propagating across metamaterials which exhibit glide symmetry possess marvelous properties (ultra-wide band propagation, strong isolation and high absorption features) capable to address the open challenges of modern RF systems. The GENIUS programme aims at providing doctoral candidates with excellent, multi-disciplinary scientific training ranging from metamaterial theory to advanced modelling methods and design of devices. We aim at helping the researchers to develop a critical thinking in a very wide range of sectors of innovation requiring mastering of novel radio-frequency systems and embedded electronics.

Benefits

The candidate will benefit of a salary approximately € 32,000 to € 55,000 per annum (depending on family status). She/he will conduct research in recognized international teams, will attend all the common training events of the Network (PhD schools, workshops, and convened sessions at international conferences) and will be in contact with the other five doctoral candidates of the network working on similar topics and with the other GENIUS partners.

Transferable-skill training will be provided both at POLITO and SINOWAVE as part of the doctoral programme.

Eligibility criteria

In order to comply with the MSCA-DN eligibility rules, the applicant:

•     must not be already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment;

•     must undertake transnational mobility: must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. Short stays such as holidays are not considered.

To be eligible for a PhD at Politecnico di Torino, the applicant is bound to have the following requirements by October 31, 2023:

- a Master of Science degree (i.e. 2nd level title, as defined by the Bologna Process), issued by an officially recognized academic institution, which grants admission in PhD programmes in the country of issuance;

- one of the following certificates of English language knowledge, regardless of the date of obtainment:

  • IELTS with minimum score 5.0;
  • one of the language certificates accepted in substitution for IELTS 5.0 by Politecnico di Torino and listed in the table “Table of 04/12/2017 updated on 26/11/2021 (transitional period)” available at: https://didattica.polito.it/cla/en/certificates

Selection process

Politecnico di Torino is engaged to assure an Open, Transparent and Merit-based Recruitment (OTM-R) of researchers. The composition of the selection committee will respect the rules of parity both in gender and in academic/industrial participation. Rejected applications will receive constructive feedbacks, and the recruited candidate will have the possibility to be accompanied in their administrative procedures to enrol in the PhD programme.

The candidates will be evaluated based on their resumes and on an interview, either in person or by telematic way.
In order to apply, candidates are required to provide the following documents to the email address genius.DC6@polito.it

1. full CV, demonstrating their personal study career and proving that they match the eligibility criteria already described above;

2. motivation letter;

3. certificate of Master of Science degree with final mark, if already obtained;

4. certificate of transcript of records for the Master of Science career, with marks;

5. one of the language certificates listed in https://didattica.polito.it/cla/en/certificates, if already obtained;

6. any other official documents which can be useful for the purpose of declaring the conformity of the title (i.e., diploma supplement, declaration of value).

All the certificates and official documents shall be issued by the relevant university in one of the following languages: Italian, English, French, Portuguese or Spanish.

Additional comments
