Offer Description

This research will achieve the summary of the mobile artifacts and monuments produced from the IX to the IV millennia BCE in the Sulcis and Iglesiente regions, that made use of mineral pigments as colorants. At the same time the whole sampling of the coloring (both ferrous and manganesiferous) materials outcrops in the Rosso and Becco Capes (San Pietro Island), and Cala Lunga (Sant'Antioco Island) will be performed. Then, a thorough archaeometric chemical (by XRF, PIXE, SEM-EDS, GC-FID) and mineralogical (by OM, XRDP, FT-IR, ATR, UV-Vis-NIR, Raman Spectroscopy) characterization either of the pigments and of the organic (by GC-FID) materials added as binder to the colorants in the archaeological artifacts will be assessed. The analysis will focus on the colorants production process and use, aiming to identify the technical expertise, the prehistoric knowledge about the mineral sources of the region and their diachronic variability.
