Offer Description

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions - Doctoral Network EXBRINER project (http://exbriner.unical.it) aims to create a new technological and interdisciplinary platform for the development of the next-generation membrane systems for sustainable exploitation of desalination brine resources, thus accelerating the transition towards a Circular Blue Industry. EXBRINER is implemented through a cross-sectoral network composed by eight European Universities, three Research Centers and four leading Industrial Companies, all with recognized excellence in the field of membrane engineering. Research and Training activities include mandatory secondments in two academic centers and one industrial center for the recruited Doctoral Candidate.

At ITM-CNR, the research project is focused on the investigation of membrane biofouling: effect of membrane properties on adhesion and secretion of extracellular substances, which includes the following activities: i) insurgence of scaling and organic fouling in membranes; ii) retention and selection of microorganisms (including cyanobacteria) at the surface of membranes in relation with operating conditions (eg., salinity, temperature, pretreatment steps), evaluating the effect of both physico-chemical and structural properties of the membranes in relation to extracellular substances secreted by microrganisms.

Two academic secondments will be required at the KATHOLIEKE UNIVERSITEIT LEUVEN (Belgium) e l’INSTITUT NATIONAL DES SCIENCES APPLIQUEES DE TOULOUSE (France) and one industrial secondment at GVS SPA (Italy).
