Offer Description

Your responsibilities

As an Electrical Engineer, within the Engineering Department (EN), you will join the EN-AA-CSE team to work on the Personnel Safety System Consolidation (PSS-CONS), whose scope is to refurbish the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Personnel Safety Systems, reaching their end-of-life after 20 years of continuous operation.

You will support the project management and engineering team on the study, execution and coordination of the replacement of the LHC audible (sirens) Evacuation System. It triggers personnel evacuation and automatic safety actions in the event of danger. The current system will be replaced by a more efficient industrial Voice Alarm safety system compliant with the applicable standards. It will include a wide range of components such as controllers' racks, loudspeakers, cables and inter-racks communication fibers.

The role includes technical and organizational tasks:

  • Identify needs and requirements from users, supporting them
  • Participate in site surveys
  • Prepare technical studies and cost estimations
  • Design engineering: design of low-voltage and very-low-voltage electrical safety systems (analogue/digital)
  • Procurement of material and services
  • Follow up of manufacture and perform Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) on the manufacturer premises
  • Participate in reception tests in the test platform on CERN site
  • Follow up of on-site works up to commissioning and handover to Operation and Maintenance teams
  • Preparation of project documents (reports, change requests, specifications, etc) and review of documents prepared by contractors/other groups
  • Budget follow up and cost analysis
  • Follow up on schedule (master planning and execution planning)
  • Development of quality plans and documents
  • Participation to project and coordination meetings

  • Excellent team-working attitude
  • A previous professional experience in the electrical domain and use of related CAD software packages could be considered an asset
  • Initial experience of Safety Systems and Voice Alarm
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage

This position requires:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.

Eligibility criteria
  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Electrical or Electronics Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
