The Vrije Universiteit Brussel and specifically its research groups MOBI and EVERGi are leading the state-of-art research in terms of Smart Multi-Energy Grids and smart integration of Electromobility with a track record of more than 40 years in the field. (https://mobi.research.vub.be/)
In addition it carries out its experiments in the Green Energy Park, a top-notch real-life laboratory in the close vicinity of Brussels where VUB closely works together with the industry in testing, validating and showcasing innovative carbon-neutral technologies, As such it aims to contribute strongly to the transition to a decarbonized world with new sustainable energy and mobility systems.
The EVERGi team is involved in many European and national R&D projects that create seamless collaboration between energy stakeholders and industrial technology solutions developers.
In this context, we are offering a 4 year scholarship for a
PhD in modelling of Multi-Energy Smart Systems.
EVERGi wants to strengthen its team by hiring a researcher-PhD candidate who will work on several National and European projects focused on the modelling of multi-energy systems.
You will be responsible for the continuous development of the existing in-house built energy system optimization model and its application to real case studies.
You will write papers on the topic and present them at international conferences.
After four years you submit a PhD dissertation and obtain a PhD Degree.
Tasks:
- R&D with respect to the scalable design and operation of multi-energy systems hosting a wide variety of energy carriers and assets.
- Continuous development of the existing energy system modelling framework
- Conducting the research according to the workplan of the project (including literature studies, simulations, data analysis, measurements, etc.)
- Disseminate research results through conferences and journal publications
- Collaborate with other researchers (internal and external) and project partners

Entrance requirements:
- Scholarship is open to all nationalities
- An academic Master degree in Electromechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
- Good knowledge of energy conversion and storage technologies
- Good knowledge of python programming language
- Good knowledge of mathematical optimisation principles
- Basic knowledge of version control (e.g. git)
- Interest in research and development
- Good communication skills in English (speaking and writing)
- Ability to work both in a team and independently while carrying out complex tasks
- Proactive and able to take initiative
