Offer Description

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES IN ALBANIA: AN ANALYSIS OF ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, AND POLICY FACTORS ON WESTERN BALKAN DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS

Supervisor: doc. Ing. Artan Qineti, PhD.

Workplace: Institute of Economic Policy and Finance

Field of study: Economics and Management

Study programme: Economics and Management of Agriculture and Food Processing

Form of study: part-time

The proposed dissertation thesis will conduct a thorough exploration of Albania's economic development challenges within the broader Western Balkans context. Albania's strategic location and historical significance underscore its pivotal role in regional economic dynamics, particularly amid its aspirations for European integration and its intersection of Eastern and Western influences. The proposed dissertation research aims to address economic development challenges in Albania within the framework of Western Balkan development economics. Utilizing rigorous empirical analysis (Quantitative Analysis, Qualitative Analysis, Survey Research, Comparative Analysis, etc.) and theoretical frameworks (Neoclassical Growth Theory, Institutional Economics, Human Capital Theory, Dependency Theory, etc.), it will focus on three main theses. Firstly, it will systematically identify and analyze key economic obstacles impeding Albania's progress, including infrastructure deficiencies, human capital limitations, institutional weaknesses, and macroeconomic instability, while contextualizing these within the wider regional dynamics of the Western Balkans. Secondly, it will explore social dynamics affecting economic development, such as demographic trends, education, healthcare, and social cohesion, considering their significance not only for Albania but also for the broader regional development agenda. Thirdly, it will critically evaluate past and current policy interventions in Albania and neighboring Western Balkan countries, scrutinizing their effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability, thus contributing to a deeper understanding of regional development policies. The imperative examine economic development challenges in Albania within the broader context of the Western Balkans holds dual significance. From a scientific perspective, examining Albania's economic landscape in this broader regional context significantly contributes to the existing body of knowledge in development economics, regional studies, and policy analysis. This research enhances our understanding of the interconnectedness of economic factors across the Western Balkans and facilitates the identification of effective regional policy measures. Moreover, from a social standpoint, failure to address these challenges not only impacts the livelihoods, well-being, and future prospects of Albania's citizens but also those of neighboring countries in the region. It poses a risk of exacerbating social inequalities, hindering human development, and impeding overall progress across the Western Balkans. Thus, addressing economic development challenges in Albania within the context of the Western Balkans is not only an academic pursuit but also a moral imperative crucial for promoting social justice, equity, and inclusive growth in the region. Topic for applicants for part time study. Dissertation will be processed in English language.
