Your responsibilities

The Engineering Department (EN) pushes forward the limits of technology to provide innovative research tools to the physics and engineering worldwide community. The position is opened in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) Group, which owns, maintains and develops the 40 years old know-how on the mechanical design, manufacturing and assembly of accelerator and detector devices.

As a Welding Engineer in the Forming & Welding section (MME-FW), you will provide a general support for the welding activities in a highly technical environment with state-of-the-art equipment in CERN's main workshop.

Your main tasks will be to:

  • Participate to the preparation and the follow-up of welding activities
  • Develop welding methods for the fabrication of high-precision prototypes and components for accelerators and experimental facilities
  • Oversee welding procedure qualification and generate welding procedures to assist manufacturing and welding personnel
  • Play a crucial role ensuring the qualification of welders operating on CERN's sites
  • Implement quality procedures and ensure traceability (welding book)
  • Provide welding engineering support to Engineering, Quality and Manufacturing to fabricate equipment in accordance with all applicable code and customer requirements
  • Provide technical support with industry standards and specifications such as Pressure Vessel Directive and ASME Boiler, ISO, AWS, etc
  • Review subcontractor welding procedures, processes and documentation in order to determine that applicable welding code and design requirements are satisfied
  • Participate to failure analyses and root cause analysis on welding related issues
  • Investigate new developments in the field of welding to evaluate their possible applications.

Skills/Qualifications
  • International Welding Engineer (IWE) diploma; with significant practical experience in welding engineering
  • In depth knowledge of welding standard and welding codes
  • Knowledge in destructive and non-destructive testing for weld inspection and qualifications
  • Good knowledge of material sciences, materials selection and characterization applied to welding
  • Knowledge of mechanical fabrication in the following domains would be an asset: pressure vessels, vacuum chambers, cryogenics
  • Initial experience in mechanical components assembly, good understanding of fabrication techniques and their application to the design process
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage

This position requires:

  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6194 and 6808 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).

Eligibility criteria
  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
