Offer Description
Within the Collège de France (Paris, France), the “Solid state chemistry-Energy (CSE)” is an internationally known laboratory focusing on the fundamental science of materials for energy storage and conversion devices. The main activities of CSE include the structural design of new insertion materials, new Li reactivity mechanisms, the mastering of interfaces, and the exploration of other chemistries beyond Li-ion (such as Na-ion, solid state batteries…), as well as monitoring of battery metrics via in situ sensing strategies.
A common challenge, essentially in all existing and newly developed batteries, is the understanding, prediction and control of battery interfaces. Adapting the structure of the interface via an appropriate salt-solvent interaction is the key to obtaining the best energy performance in metal-ion batteries (Li-ion, Na-ion, etc.). This project aims to describe this complex interface using various in-situ and ex-situ characterisation techniques coupled with detailed electrochemical studies. The project will particularly benefit from the piezoelectric operando detection strategy, commonly known as Electrochemical Quartz Crystal Microbalance (EQCM). This methodology, benefiting from new cell designs adapted to battery characterisation, will be used to study the formation of the electrode (anode/cathode)/electrolyte interface, electrode stability, ion (de)solvation and the intercalation process. The fundamental knowledge acquired will be used to design better interfaces and obtain increased stability, lifetime and power in alternatives to Li-ion technologies.
