Offer Description

Are you interested in advancing continuum theory and computational mechanics to innovate drug delivery systems, thus unlocking new therapeutic strategies for curing bacterial infections, liver damage, and neurological disorders? Are you enthusiastic about collaborating within a highly interdisciplinary environment alongside chemists, biologists, medical doctors, and engineers, with the aim of pushing the boundaries of the current state-of-the-art?

At the Soft Matter Group, Department of Continuum Mechanics, RWTH Aachen University, we are establishing (1) original continuum-mechanics domain-knowledge to enable the creation of interpretable constitutive learners, and (2) statistical learning of large mechanical datasets. Our research inquiries span various scales and encompass multiple physical principles governing phase transitions, damage, and fracture phenomena observed in polymers, biological tissues, as well as natural and synthetic fiber reinforcements.

A fixed-term research assistant position, with an initial duration of one year and the possibility of extension for up to an additional three years, is currently open within our Group. The position will remain available until filled, with an employment date no later than October 1, 2024. The appointed candidate will be engaged in fluid-structure analysis of mechanical data relevant to a novel drug delivery system comprising polymer particles as drug carriers. The analysis outcomes are expected to inform synthesis guidance for optimizing drug release upon ultrasonication. Furthermore, the successful applicant will have the opportunity of pursuing a doctoral degree while holding this position. Salary for this position corresponds to pay grade EG 13 TV-L as per the German public service salary scale (TV-L). For instance, according to https://lohntastik.de/od-rechner/tv-salary-calculator/TV-L/E-13/1, the gross salary for pay group E-13 tier 1 of the TV-L is €4,188.38. In North Rhine-Westphalia, including Aachen, a gross monthly salary of €4,188.38 in tax class 4 corresponds to a net salary of €2,704.57.

Academic Benefits: Opportunity to develop a clearly defined research proposal; Comprehensive big picture of the field; Individualized guidance; Micromanagement-free learning environment.

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a complete application, comprising a curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, certificates, a motivation letter, and two letters of recommendation, compiled into a single PDF document, to the principal investigator, Dr.-Ing. Vu Ngoc Khiêm, khiem.vu@rwth-aachen.de, with the subject line "DSLMed_1903". In adherence to RWTH's commitment to equal opportunity, applicants are kindly requested to refrain from including their photograph in their application.

Application deadline:  May 31, 2024.
