Faculty 02 Social Sciences, Media and Sport - Institute of Educational Science - Research Unit "School Improvement and School Effectiveness Research" at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz

Research associate
full-time (100%)

The position is part of the DFG project "School in times of change" in the " Center School improvement and school effectiveness research". The joint project operates at the interface between quantitative school effectiveness and teaching research and research into the history of education and is headed by Prof Dr Tobias Feldhoff together with Prof Dr Sabine Reh and Prof Dr Eckhard Klieme from the DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education. Based on the Three-State-Study by Fend at the end of the 1970s, the project collected data at the same 24 schools in 2023 using largely identical questionnaires and tests. In total, data is available for both measurement dates from around 2,000 teachers, 3,700 students and almost 500 classes. Linking the data from the two surveys should provide information about the changes in school and teaching cultures and their paths of impact. In addition to historical comparisons, the data can also be used to analyse current questions in school and teaching research on topics such as the effect of teachers' beliefs, maths and English lessons, parental support with homework, student performance, students' well-being and learning morale, and social inequality. You can find out more about the study here.

Your tasks:

  • Analysis of quantitative-empirical data (including multi-level analysis using regressions, mediation and moderation analyses)
  • Publication of project results and presentation at (inter)national conferences
  • Development and processing of an independent research question as part of the project
  • Support in the coordination of the DFG joint project "Schule im Wandel - SchiWa" between the Berlin, Frankfurt and Mainz locations
  • Documentation of the complex data sets (teacher and student questionnaires and performance test)
