Offer Description

Research, teaching and technology transfer at the Hamburg University of Technology are based on the idea of technology for humanity. The Hamburg University of Technology is a family-friendly and sustainable university with high performance and quality standards, striving for excellence in all of its research fields. Interdisciplinarity, innovation, regionality and internationality are guiding principles in our work.

The Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) invites applications for the following position at the School of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics (EIM):

Full Professorship (W3) in the Field of Photonics

The TUHH is seeking applications from candidates who have demonstrated excellent achievements in photonics research and teaching with a strong focus on photonic materials, metasurfaces and/or applications of photonics. Applicants are expected to have an excellent international track record in fundamental and applied research and to be able to show examples of practical implementation. They should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary work with other engineering sciences at the TUHH and in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region, contributing to systems based on photonic materials enabling novel communication and sensing systems. In the field of photonics and metasurfaces, we particularly welcome applications from candidates with a background in one or several of the following research areas:

  • Opto-electronic components and systems based on novel materials (ePICs)
  • Active devices (laser and detector)
  • Non-linear photonics on chip
  • Metamaterials and metasurfaces
  • Novel functional and 2D materials
  • Millimetre-wave and terahertz photonics
  • Photonic sensing systems

The successful candidate will head the Institute of Photonics. A strong research contribution

to photonic materials and applications is expected with publications in high-impact journals and conferences. There are excellent cooperation opportunities with the Forschungslabor Mikroelektronik Deutschland ForLab HELIOS for photonics/electronics co-integration. The post holder is expected to have the ability and willingness to work with partners at the Hamburg University of Technology and in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region, such as DESY and the University of Hamburg, on the establishment of large collaborative research projects, such as a Collaborative Research Centre of the German Research Foundation.

The professorship is responsible for teaching in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes of EIM. The position holder is expected to actively contribute to the further development of the TUHH’s curricula. The professorship is due to commence in the winter semester 2024/2025.

The deadline for applications is 2 May 2024.

The Hamburg University of Technology is an equal opportunity employer and particularly welcomes and encourages applications from women. Women are underrepresented among professors at the TUHH. They will therefore be given preferential consideration in the case of equivalent qualifications. Applications from disabled people with equivalent qualifications will also be given preference.
