Offer Description
Position: Applications are invited for a 24-month Research Masters position in Civil Engineering. The studentship will start as soon as possible.
Description: One fully funded 24-month MEngSc by Research studentship in Civil Engineering is available in the UCD School of Civil Engineering starting September 2024.
TROCI (Towards Resilient Operation of Critical Infrastructure) is supported by the Irish Research Council in Ireland (CHIST-ERA programme 2022). This three-year transnational research project will allow a multidisciplinary team comprised of partners from across Europe to work on the development of innovative hybrid hardware-software solutions using advanced use cases to enhance the resilience of critical water and energy infrastructures in response to cyber threats. TROCI will develop a disruptive Instrumentation and Control (I&C) platform for critical infrastructures that will combine advanced machine learning and AI methods, novel sensing solutions, IoT and stakeholders to make critical water and energy infrastructures secure, private, and resilient. UCD team brings interdisciplinary expertise in civil engineering and computer science and will focus on applications of developed solutions in critical water infrastructures (water distribution networks).
As part of this ambitious transnational project, the candidate will work closely with TROCI team members (including postdocs, PhDs, and Research Assistants) across different institutions. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a team of experts in water engineering, data scientists, and relevant industrial stakeholders.

Funding and Fees: The successful candidate will receive a stipend of €22,000 per annum, full funding for UCD tuition fees for EU/non-EU applicants. The position is funded for twenty-four months - subject to satisfactory progress. Additional research and travel expenses will also be available.

The applicant should have a first or upper-second-class honours degree or a bachelor’s degree in civil or water resources or a relevant field. The candidate should be highly motivated and capable of working both independently and within a team. Strong numerical, analytical, and programming skills and the ability to communicate scientific research findings are desirable.
Previous experience working with AI techniques is an advantage.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and a high level of competence in the English language are essential (See UCD’s policy on minimum English language requirements).
