Job description:

DESY

The "ErUM-WAVE" project aims to develop algorithms to predict the impact of seismic wave fields propagating in the earth. The complex 3-dimensional wave field challenge is tackled using powerful machine learning techniques based on modern neuronal network architectures, and a distributed fiber optic sensing network comprised of thousands of seismic detectors installed on the DESY campus. Focus of the PhD position is to identify, evaluate and predict seismic waves i.e. originating from earthquakes, ocean waves, traffic or mechanical perturbations, and their influence on DESY’s accelerators. The ErUM-WAVE project is carried out in collaboration with several leading institutes and universities in the field of machine learning and geophysics (Universities Hamburg, Münster, Aachen and Wuppertal).

About your role:

  • Development and verification of machine learning algorithms to predict 3-dimensional waves
  • High-end data analysis and computing on our high-performance IT-cluster
  • Development of innovative data analysis tools with theory researcher groups
  • Being part in an international team of scientists to improve environmental control for next-generation accelerators
  • Presentation of results in international conferences
  • Supervise master's theses and work with students

About you:

  • Master's degree in physics, computer science or related fields
  • Good knowledge or strong interest in geo-science, accelerator physics and deep learning methods (e.g. GNN, surrogate models, transformer neural networks)
  • The candidate should ideally be proficient in the Python and C programming languages and be familiar with Linux systems
  • Experience with neural networks, machine learning and their applications
  • Excellent knowledge of English
  • Working in an international team and good communication skills
  • Experience in seismic wave field modeling would be a plus

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.

We look forward to receiving your application via our application portal:
