Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term (2 years) position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Business Intelligence and Analytics with LERO, The Irish Software Research Centre at the University of Galway, Ireland.

 

This position is co-funded by LERO and Clydaville Investments Ltd. t/a The KILKENNY Group and is available from May/June 2024 to April/May 2026.

 

Background:

Effective data capturing, management and analytics are of huge importance to organisations operating in retail to deliver an optimal experience to customers during presales, sales and aftersales, and, ultimately, to compete in ever-changing markets. However, designing and deploying adequate data and analytics pipelines is quite complex due to the wide and ever-growing number of channels that organisations can use to reach customers. This project will focus on determining and exploring the characteristics and the challenges of the creation and deployment of an omni-channel self-service analytics architecture for a retail business. This project will be conducted in close and direct collaboration with the co-funding industry partner, Clydaville Investments Ltd. t/a The KILKENNY Group.

 

Job Description:

To address the issues above, we welcome applications from candidates across multiple disciplines, including information systems, computer science, operations management, and analytics. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Pierangelo Rosati at the University of Galway and will be based at the industry partner’s office in Cork, Ireland. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to publish in the top-ranked journals and must have a strong publication record as well as excellent writing skills. The postdoctoral researcher must be keen to work in direct collaboration with industry, a motivated self-starter, be focused, and exacting in their work ethic.

 

Duties:

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Conduct a specified programme of research and scholarship under the supervision and direction of your Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support as appropriate.
  • Keep up to date with research related methods and techniques, in particular, developments in the specific research area.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on areas of shared research interest.
  • To have knowledge and understanding of the policy, practices and procedures, relevant to the role (e.g. Commercial Awareness, Research Ethics, Knowledge Transfer, Data Privacy, and Intellectual Property Rights).
  • To complete the administrative work to support the programme of research.
  • Know the legal requirements regarding data protection and confidentiality data protection requirements.
  • Present on research progress and outcomes to industry stakeholders, conferences, and other academics as agreed with the PI.
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research with the support of and under the supervision of the PI.
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post.

 

Qualifications/Skills required:

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in information systems, computer science, operations management, data analytics or equivalent.
  • Relevant experience in an area of relevance to the retail analytics project.
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbally as well as in writing.
  • A track record of publications.
  • Strong coordination, organisational and management skills.
  • Evidence of strong quantitative skills.

 

Desirable Requirements:

  • Good dissemination skills targeting non-academic audiences (industry-focused).
  • Prior industry experience or prior experience with collaboration with industry research partners.
  • Prior experience with Amazon Web Services or similar cloud service platforms.
  • Prior experience with Machine Learning projects.
  • Prior experience with PowerBI or Tableau.
  • Prior experience with systems design.

 

Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €42,782 - €54,965 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.

 

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
