Offer Description

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in the field of experimental atomic physics. The post is on a fixed-term contract of five years and will be held in the CALT (Centre for Advanced Laser Techniques) department at the Institute of Physics in Zagreb, Croatia. The applicant will join the experimental research work of the Group for Quantum Technologies, and will work on the development of quantum memories for application in quantum communications and synchronization of atomic clocks. PhD supervisor is dr. Damir Aumiler (aumiler@ifs.hr).

The work tasks involve the development of quantum memories based on alkali atomic vapor. Various protocols for optimizing the memory performance will be tested, including efficiency, photon storage time, capacity, and fidelity. The development of modules for quantum memory as well as memory performance testing will be carried out within the project Croatian Quantum Communication Infrastructure – CroQCI. Research methods include high-resolution laser spectroscopy, and frequency stabilization techniques for continuous-wave lasers and optical frequency combs.

Candidates are expected to have good knowledge of atomic physics, should be highly motivated for experimental work on the relevant topic, and should have excellent knowledge of English language.

Priority will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in studies and research work (recognitions, awards, scholarships, published works, presentations at conferences, etc.). Hands-on experience with the research topic, including experimental techniques, is an advantage.

Mandatory requirement is completed undergraduate and graduate study (Master's degree) in Physics or equivalent degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate, and enroll in a PhD School of Physics.

The application should include:

1. A motivation letter, including research interests and plans

2. Curriculum vitae, including experience and advantages

3. Certificate of undergraduate degree in Physics (Master's degree or equivalent)
