In this position you will work closely together with our interdisciplinary team consisting of physicians, researchers, PhD students, data managers and other data scientists. Within the department of cardiology, we are a dynamic and group committed to advancing knowledge and solving critical challenges. We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished AI Specialist to join our team and contribute to cutting-edge research in the intersection of artificial intelligence and cardiology.

Our cardiology AI research group focusses on the development and implementation of various algorithms aiming at the improvement of heart care for patients and the sustainability of cardiac health care in general. Although our work currently mainly uses the electrocardiogram as a basis for AI, we are expanding towards other (imaging) modalities. The group consists of multiple PhD students with various backgrounds including AI, medicine and technical medicine, additionally, multiple masters’ students are actively involved. Our AI research group is rapidly expanding, requiring additional knowledge and manpower on the use of AI in health care.

Your primary tasks will consist of supervising PhD students and thesis students working on various AI related projects, develop and validate AI-models for various clinical use cases, you will be in charge of our AI research infrastructure. Furthermore, you will get the chance to shape your own future by setting up you own research line and being actively involved in strategic decision making and the acquisition of new research funding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research Leadership: Lead and conduct innovative research in the development and application of artificial intelligence in cardiology.
  • Mentorship: Supervise PhD students and junior researchers, promoting their professional growth and ensuring the successful execution of research projects in our department.
  • AI Infrastructure: Develop and maintain state-of-the-art AI research infrastructure, including high-performance computing resources, datasets, and software tools, to support research initiatives and clinical implementation.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals, data scientists, and engineers to facilitate the seamless integration of AI solutions into real-world healthcare settings.
  • Publication: Disseminate research findings through high-impact publications, presentations at conferences, and contributions to grant proposals.
  • Innovation: Stay current with the latest developments in AI and healthcare, identifying and actively pursuing opportunities for innovation and collaboration.

Requirements

Specific Requirements

The candidate for this listing has a PhD in AI, computer science, machine learning, data science, or a related field with a strong emphasis on AI in healthcare. The candidate has a clear research interest in the development and application of AI in the medical environment.

In addition, the candidate has:

  • High proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Experience with AI research projects related to healthcare, with a track record of publications in reputable conferences and journals.
  • Demonstratable experience with Python programing, ML frameworks and research orientated packages like numpy, pytorch (lightning), scipy, scikit learn and pandas. (intermediate to expert proficiency level).
  • Experience with deep learning e.g. on medical data, during your PhD.
  • Experience with data science, ML/DL infrastructure system administration.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Ideally, the candidate has:

  • High proficiency in spoken and written English and Dutch.
  • Demonstratable experience with research grant applications.
  • Experience with system administration, particularly for Linux-based systems, proficiency in managing servers, configuring network settings, and addressing security vulnerabilities.
  • Prior working experience in writing production software – additional experience with medical software regulation standards is helpful (ISO 13485 and IEC-62304).
