Offer Description

Under the supervision of the coordinator of the ANR FACT_WORK project (ANR reference 22-CE27-0003), which aims to study the first ceramic factories in South-West Asia, the researcher (M/F) will develop a GIS of pottery workshops from the 7th-2nd millennia BCE between Mesopotamia and the Levant, documenting their structures and production techniques. The researcher will also take part in archaeological excavations and surveys.

The researcher (M/F) will:
- develop and implement a spatial database of ceramic workshops in south-west Asia between the 7th and 2nd millennia, using open access software;
- take part in archaeological fieldwork in Iraqi Kurdistan, Federal Iraq and the Levant, directing excavation trenches and sampling kilns and ceramic production structures;
- take part in experimental archaeology sessions;
- take part in writing scientific reports and articles.

The FACT_WORK project (Reference ANR-22-CE27-0003) is an archaeological research programme aimed at defining the historical, political, technical, cultural and organisational conditions that enabled the emergence of the first very large-scale ceramic production centres in Southwest Asia between the 7th and 2nd millennia BCE. The project, led by UMR 5133 Archéorient and coordinated by Johnny Samuele Baldi, is based on the fieldwork carried out by the Qara Dagh mission (in Iraqi Kurdistan) and the Larsa-'Uwaili mission (in southern Iraq), as well as on data produced by other international missions. The researcher (M/F) will be based at UMR 5133 Archéorient in Lyon, will take part in fieldwork in the Near East for 8 to 10 weeks a year and will compile the available data on ancient pottery workshops in an open-access spatial database.
