Offer Description

The Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Leipzig invites applications for the following position in the research project "Bibliotheca Arabica – Towards a New History of Arabic Literature" at the earliest possible date:

Research Software Engineer in the field of Digital Humanities (m/f/d)

The appointment is initially for a period of two years, with the prospect of continued employment during the project duration (until 2035).

Pay grade: TV-L 13, job scope: part-time 50% or 75%

Place of work: Leipzig

Job Description

  • Continuously develop our two project applications under production conditions (graph database khizana.saw-leipzig.de; internal annotation tool) and implement additional interfaces.
  • Work closely with domain experts to define and implement best practices for data modeling and integration.
  • Develop, and implement an efficient system for Arabic Entity Resolution and Record Matching.
  • Keep up-to-date with latest developments in applied Digital Humanities, participate in project publications.
  • Long term: evaluate, apply, and advance digital methods for data-related analysis and visualisation.

Candidate Profile 

  • University degree (Master’s/Diploma, PhD) in Computer Science or Digital Humanities
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language
  • Experience in developing and implementing complex applications
  • Experience in Digital Humanities projects or interdisciplinary communication with domain experts
  • Proficiency in English 
Specific Requirements

Desirable Experiences/Competences (one or more):

  • Developing and operating graph-based or relational database systems
  • Developing tools for representing, analysing and visualising research data
  • Ruby/Jruby and JavaScript
  • Named entity resolution/disambiguation techniques and record matching
  • Optical character recognition (kraken, eScriptorium/Django)
