NOTIFICATION FOR INITIATION OF INVESTIGATION SCHOLARSHIP

INOV - Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores Inovação (INOV) is calling for applications for 1 (one) Research Initiation Scholarship, with the aim of starting the candidate's scientific training by taking part in R&D projects, developing the work plan as part of the "CICLOPE AFD" R&D project.

INOV is both the funding body and the host organization for the scholarship holder. The sources of funding are wholly owned by INOV.

Generic scientific area: Machine Learning

Specific Scientific Area: Automatic Fire Detection

Eligibility conditions: Enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Computer Engineering, or a related area, or holders of an academic degree who are enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution.

Work Plan: The Ciclope system is capable of automatically detecting forest fires using image processing algorithms. The recent emergence of new Machine Learning technologies, combined with the need to continually improve the detection system's capacity, is sufficient motivation to carry out exploratory actions that indicate possible paths for the evolution of current solutions. In addition to research into the state of the art in Machine Learning, some areas to consider during the course of the scholarship will be:

- Analysis of specialized processing solutions by target segment of the image area;

- Analysis of specialized processing solutions by time of day;

The work carried out will have to generate results that can be integrated into CICLOPE's technological solutions, for evaluation and possible operational use.

Applicable legislation and regulations: Hiring will be governed by the provisions of the legislation in force relating to the Research Fellow Statute, approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18 August, with various amendments, including those determined by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28 August, as well as the INOV Scholarship Regulations, approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology on 03/01/2020 and the FCT Scholarship Regulations in force.

Place of work and Scientific Supervisor: The work will be carried out at INOV, in Lisbon, Portugal, under the supervision of Joel Almeida.

Duration of the grant: The grant will last for 6 months, starting in April 2024, possibly renewable until the end of the project or budget allocation and provided that the renewal does not exceed a maximum period of 1 year.

Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the Research Initiation grant corresponds to €601.12 per month, according to the table of amounts for grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (Valor bolsas FCT), and payment will be made by bank transfer to the bank account held by the grant holder.

Evaluation and selection criteria and procedures: The selection of the scholarship holder will be made by the jury, which will rank the candidates based on an analysis of the information and application documents, in accordance with the provisions of article 12 of the INOV Scholarship Regulations. The following criteria will be used:

▪ Quality of the candidate's CV [25%]

▪ Suitability of the academic background to the work to be carried out within the scope of the project [25%]

▪ Experience in activities related to the work plan [30%]

▪ Demonstrated motivation [20%]

Each application will be scored from 0 (minimum) to 20 (maximum) points, taking into account the criteria mentioned.
