Offer Description
CREAF is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work on the project CoForFunc ‘Toward a biome-scale monitoring of the Congo basin FORest FUNCtional composition’ with ref. PCI2023-146002 - MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/UE and funded by Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Agencia Estatal de Investigación and co-funded by European Union in the context of a Biodiversa+ European transnational project.
The project aims at developing an integrated approach for monitoring the tree functional diversity of the Congo Basin Forests to support biome-scale assessment of their vulnerability to global changes. CREAF’s participation in the project focuses on characterizing variation in functioning of canopy species along environmental gradients, combining proximal sensing of tree phenology and ground-based ecophysiological and functional trait measurements, as well as up-scaling field data to link it to remote sensing observations. The project will be conducted in collaboration with other research partners in Europe (France, Germany, Belgium) with long term experience working at the study sites, and well as with several local partners in Cameroon and Congo.
The candidate will join a large research team of >20 people working on the effects of environmental changes on vegetation functioning and dynamics at scales that range from the individual plant to the region and the globe, and will benefit from the training and career development opportunities offered through our research group, CREAF and UAB, exposure to international research and constant interaction with other groups at CREAF and elsewhere.
A full-time contract is offered (37.5 hours per week) is planned to start by May 2024, with a duration of 24 months. The salary offered is €31.847,46 gross per year.
TASKS
- Set up a field site in Cameroon (Bouamir, Dja Reserve) to continuously monitor tree growth and water status in selected species, as well as associated environmental variables, in collaboration with other local and international partners.
- Prepare and conduct field campaigns to measure water relations traits in the same set of species at the Bouamir site in Cameroon.
- Help in additional trait measurement campaigns in other sites in the Congo Basin, always in the context of the CoForFunc project.
- Analyze field data obtained in the project and draft 1-2 manuscripts resulting from those measurements, in agreement with the project’s objectives.
- Assist in project management tasks, including the coordination of CREAF’s team with other partners, to achieve the project deliverables in due time.
