RESEARCH GRANT(BI) (1 vacancy)

 

Reference: 2024-014-BI-BIOSYSMO

 

A competition is open for the attribution of 1 Research Grant in the framework of the project "BIOSYSMO - Bioremediation systems exploiting synergies for improved removal of mixed pollutants" funded by the European Union under the GA_101060211, according to the following conditions:

 

  1. Scientific area: Biology

 

  1. Admission requirements

i) The candidates must hold a degree in Biology (with classification equal or higher than 15 values (in 20)) and a Master degree in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (with classification equal or higher than 18 values (in 20));

ii) Be enrolled in a doctoral programme in Aquatic Sciences or on a non-academic degree course integrated in an educational project of a developed higher education institution in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, if applicable;

iii) Experience in bioremediation and phytoremediation;

iv) Experience in sampling in coastal ecosystems;

v) Experience in isolation and preservation of microorganisms;

vi) Experience in analysing data generated from NGS tools using bioinformatics pipelines and downstream analysis for prokaryotes;

vii) Experience in working in research projects.

 

In the event the degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, said degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16th August until the signature of the contract.

 

  1. Work plan:

The candidate will be involved in research activities regarding the development, optimization and application of biosystems for estuarine sediment phytoremediation, namely in the following activities: i) development of novel microbial consortia with bioremediation potential; ii) optimization of the efficiency of the developed consortia in microcosms experiments.

                                      

  1. Legislation and official rules:

Law nº. 40/2004, 18th August (Research Fellowship and Studentship Regulation) and amended by Law No. 202/2012, 27th August; Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. and CIIMAR Grants Regulation.

 

  1. Work place:

The work will be carried out at CIIMAR, under the scientific supervision of PhD Ana Paula Mucha and PhD Marisa Almeida.

 

  1. Duration of the grant:

Duration of six (6) months, starting March 2024, under the regime of exclusive dedication.

 

  1. Monthly maintenance stipend:

The monthly maintenance allowance is 1.259,64 € in agreement with the monthly maintenance stipend table of the grants directly attributed by FCT, I.P. within the country (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en ).

 

  1. Selection methods:

The first ranking of candidates will be performed after a CV evaluation based on:

  • Academic grades plus scientific area: 50%;
  • Experience in the research field: 50%.

If necessary an interview will be done to the three top candidates, after which a final ranking will be performed based on:

  • CV evaluation: 80%;
  • Interview:  20%.

                               

The jury reserves the right to not assign the research grant if none of the candidates meets all requirements and match the desired profile.

  1. Form of Advertising/notification of results:

The final results of the evaluation will be published through a list sorting the candidates according to their attributed mark, on the CIIMAR website and by e-mail; in case of disagreement, the candidates have a 10-working day term to contest the decision, if he/she so wishes, as provided for in the Código do Procedimento Administrativo in a preliminary hearing setting.

The jury reserves the right to not assign the research grant if none of the candidates meets all requirements and match the desired profile.

Based on the final list, a reserve list will be established, which will be used for the eventual attribution of new research grants under this project.

 

  1.  Deadline for application and presentation of applications:

The competition is open from 23th of February until 7th March 2024.  The applications must be formalized, compulsorily, by sending the following documents:

  • detailed Curriculum vitae in English including e-mail address and phone number, and mentioning clearly the academic grades and the relevant research experience;
  • copy of the eligibility certificates
  • motivation letter
  • evidence of enrollment in a doctoral program or non-academic degree course
