Offer Description

Applications are open for 1 Research Studentship for a PhD student, within the framework of project SmartRetail (SMART RETAIL - Contrato 00018 - IST-ID) financed by national funds PRR (Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência - C645440011-00000062), through IAPMEI -Agência para a Competitividade e Inovação

Workplan: The work concerns the development of methods for handling data significantly corrupted by outliers. The methods are to be based on an optimization problem that fits a parametric model to a dataset up to a pre-specified number of data points, which corresponds to the expected number of inliers. The optimization problem relies on a non-convex loss function that gauges the merit of fit, not by the largest model residual that a parameter yields, but by its (L+1)th largest residual, where L is the anticipated number of outliers. This  approach essentially erases L data points from the dataset, such tentatively excluded groups varying from model parameter to model parameter. The work focus on addressing this challenging non-convex optimization problem either via exact methods or via approximate, yet competitive, ones, and showcase their usefulness in deriving robust solutions to real-world applications.

Duration: The research fellowship will have the duration of 6 months. It is expected to begin March 2024 and may be eventually renewed.
