Offer Description

Research project name and description:

"A male-specific model of eating disorders and its application in psychoeducation: a longitudinal and experimental study".

The project aims to develop a male-specific model of eating disorders (with specific symptoms, symptom sequence and starting points) and to develop a brief psychoeducational intervention based on this model and to test its effectiveness in increasing men's intention to seek help. Hospitalisation and mortality rates for eating disorders are particularly high in men, despite the widespread recognition of eating disorders as a 'female problem'. Research, screening tools, and psycho-educational materials are almost exclusively for women. This leads to difficulties for men in seeking professional help, as they themselves, their loved ones, and medical staff may overlook symptoms or consider them a manifestation of another, less 'feminine' disorder. The project consists of a longitudinal Study 1 (N = 500 men from the general population, 3 measurements over 12 months) and an experimental Study 2 (N = 200 men at increased risk of eating disorders, 3 measurements over 3 months). The project can provide not only new knowledge about male-specific risk factors for eating disorders, but also tools to help men correctly recognise their symptoms and decide whether to seek help.
