Offer Description
Area of research:
Scientific / postdoctoral posts
Job description:The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for geosphere research. As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres we are part of the largest scientific organization in Germany. With approximately 1,500 employees our key mission is to secure a profound understanding of the systems and processes of solid Earth, to develop strategies and options for action in addressing global change and its impacts on a regional level, to understand natural hazards and to minimize associated risks, to ensure the sustainable provision of energy and raw materials for a high-tech society and to evaluate the influence of human activity on system Earth. For the BMBF funded project SMART-EGS (Synthesis of numerical Modelling Approaches for Reservoir Treatments in Enhanced Geothermal Systems) in Section 4.8 “Geoenergy” we invite applications of motivated candidates for a:
Reference Number 9042
SMART-EGS will contribute to the development of a robust workflow for such problems, based on two basic concepts: an upscaling approach and the parallel comparative use of three different numerical concepts. The simulations are based on real measured data on which the models are first calibrated and then validated. The implementation of the workflow ultimately aims to provide predictions for the development of a multi-fracture system for petrothermal exploitation of the subsurface. The data base for SMART-EGS comes from a multi-frac experiment at the Bedretto underground laboratory, the additional experimental studies planned there, and from the ST 1 deep heat project in Finland at field scale. As a result of the method development, concepts for at least one real pilot site for petrothermal utilisation of the subsurface will be developed.
As Postdoc, you will support this project by performing the particle-based simulations of hydraulic stimulation treatments using the commercial simulator Particle Flow Code and comparing the results to the other modelling approaches.
Your responsibilities:
- Development and calibration of particle based EGS model
- Model verification at field scale
- Model application to pilot project
- Risk analysis for pilot site
- Comparison of modelling approaches
- Publication of research results in scientific journals and project reports
- Presentation of the work at scientific conferences and project meetings
Your qualifications:
- PhD degree in reservoir/petroleum engineering, applied geosciences, geology, environmental sciences, geophysics, physics, mathematics or similar
- Experience in particle-based simulation (e.g., Particle Flow Code)
- Background knowledge in the topic of Enhanced Geothermal Systems
- Proficiency in spoken and written English; German language skills are useful, but no requirement
- High motivation and creativity as well as a result-oriented, structured and reliable working attitude
- Willingness and ability to work in diverse, interdisciplinary and international teams
- Excellent communication skills
Start date: As soon as possible
Fixed-term: 2 years
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
Place of work: Potsdam
